Roasting the Beans
The Art and Science of Coffee Roasting: From Green Beans to Perfect Brews
Roasting is the magical process that unlocks the rich aroma and flavor hidden within green coffee beans. Before roasting, green coffee beans are stored in their raw form, preserving their quality and taste. In this unroasted state, the beans are soft, spongy, and have a grassy scent. However, once roasted, they transform into the fragrant, flavorful coffee we all love.
The Roasting Process: Unlocking Coffee's Full Potential
Roasting involves heating green coffee beans to high temperatures, causing chemical changes that develop the rich flavors and aromas we associate with coffee. The beans undergo rapid transformation as they reach the ideal roast temperature. Once they reach the peak of their transformation, they are quickly cooled to stop the roasting process.
Roasted beans weigh less than their green counterparts because the moisture inside the beans evaporates during roasting. The result is a crunchy, flavorful bean, ready to be ground and brewed into your perfect cup of coffee.
Understanding Coffee Roasts: Light, Medium, and Dark
At our roastery, we carefully roast our coffee beans to bring out their unique flavors. Our coffee roasts fall into four primary categories based on color and flavor profile: light roast, medium roast, medium-dark roast, and dark roast.
Light Roast: For a Milder, Fruity Flavor
Light roasted coffee beans are a light brown color and are typically preferred for milder coffee varieties. These beans have a smooth, delicate flavor and no oil on the surface, as they are roasted for a shorter period. Light roasts retain the highest level of acidity, and their flavor profile is often fruity and floral, showcasing the unique characteristics of the bean’s origin.
Medium Roast: A Balanced Flavor
Medium roasts are medium brown in color with a well-balanced flavor. These beans have a stronger taste than light roasts and have a dry, non-oily surface. Medium roasts offer a smooth, full-bodied flavor, with a moderate acidity that is perfect for those who prefer a balanced cup of coffee without too much bitterness.
Medium-Dark Roast: Rich, Bold Flavor
Medium-dark roasted beans have a rich, dark color and a slight oil sheen on the surface. These beans develop a more intense flavor profile with a bittersweet aftertaste. Medium-dark roasts offer a deeper, bolder flavor with a bit of a smoky note, making them perfect for those who enjoy a slightly stronger coffee taste.
Dark Roast: Bold and Bitter
Dark roasts produce shiny, black beans with an oily surface and a pronounced bitterness. The longer the beans are roasted, the less acidity they will have in the final cup. Dark roasts range from slightly dark to charred, and the flavor is more robust with reduced fruity notes. These roasts are ideal for people who enjoy a rich, bold coffee with deep, roasted flavors.
